Do you experience sore throats or need to clear your throat on a regular basis? Is there a lump in your throat that just will not go away no matter how many times you swallow? Do you experience unrelenting hiccups or coughing? Do you experience nausea, regurgitation or chest pain? Do you suffer from sinusitis or pharynitis? If you have experienced any of the above symptoms, then it is possible you suffer from silent gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) also known as acid reflux.
What is silent GERD? It is acid reflux without heartburn or any symptoms related to heartburn. Silent GERD can be difficult to diagnose because there are either no obvious symptoms or the symptoms can point to other conditions. Other possible signs of silent GERD include sleep problems. For example, sleep apnea and excessive snoring.
So how does one know if they are suffering from silent GERD? Doctors will not always be able to diagnose silent GERD by just listening to the patient’s symptoms. The most reliable way to determine if one suffers from the condition is to have one or more of the following tests done.
One test is called the Barium Swallow. With this test the patient is given a barium solution to drink. The solution produces a contrast so the doctor can see easily observe what is going on inside the digestive tract. Once the barium solution has a chance to be absorbed, a technician will perform a series of x-rays of the digestive tract. The doctor will then look for any evidence of acid reflux.
Another procedure is an endoscopy. This procedure involves placing a small tube down the throat. The tube has a light at one end with a camera attached to it. The camera allows the doctor to observe what is going on in the pharynx, larynx, and the esophagus. The doctor also will look for any evidence of acid reflux damage to the area. In addition, the doctor may take tissue samples for further testing.
The proton pump inhibitor test is another option. This test involves giving the patient a medication that will help reduce the amount of acid that is produced by the stomach. If the medication is working, the symptoms will either lessen or disappear altogether. If this is the case, then the patient is most likely suffering from silent GERD.
Another option is monitoring the pH levels. There are two ways to accomplish this. The first one is inserting a tiny tube into the patient’s esophagus to measure the pH level (acidity) in the esophagus. Another way is to attach a capsule to the esophagus and monitor the pH levels that way. If the pH levels are high, then GERD can be the reason.
So how does one treat silent GERD? The most common way is with OTC and prescription medications such as antacids, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors. In addition, changing one’s diet is important. Eating smaller meals and avoiding trigger food such as oranges, lemons, coffee, tea, onions, chocolate, and alcohol will reduce the chances of an attack.
