Barrett’s Esophagus – Are You a Candidate?

The Risk of Esophageal Cancer

Barrett’s Esophagus is a condition where the lining of the esophagus is replaced with tissue cells like those in the intestine. It results in the abnormal growth of these intestinal-type cells into the esophagus. However there are no known symptoms or problems directly associated with having Barrett’s Esophagus. So why should you care if you have it?

What Causes Barrett’s Esophagus?

For unknown reasons, Barrett’s Esophagus occurs 3 times more often in men than women. About 1% of the population are diagnosed with it each year. Current evidence shows that people with longstanding gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and acid reflux disease have a much higher chance of contracting Barrett’s Esophagus. Common sense would suggest that it is related to the reflux of stomach acid of stomach contents into the esophagus.

While many of those suffering from GERD and acid reflux disease may turn to their doctor for prescription medication, this doesn’t mean the drugs provide a cure or address the cause of Barrett’s Esophagus. These very drugs have been proven to come with severe side effects, some of which can be deadly. Rather than taking risky drugs that only mask the pain, natural GERD remedies treat the cause and prevent the onset of Barrett’s Esophagus.

Natural GERD & Acid Reflux Remedies

Many patients are now turning to natural remedies and home cures for their gastric reflux and GERD symptoms. Alternative health remedies not only provide a low cost solution but they can improve whole body health. Natural remedies should also be used in conjunction with an overall wellness plan that includes changing bad habits, getting more exercise and a healthy diet and eating plan.

The Risks of Barrett’s Esophagus

The main concern with risks related to Barrett’s Esophagus is the potential for contracting a deadly form of esophageal cancer. Esophageal cancer is extremely dangerous. Unfortunately it is hard to detect. Diagnosis of Barrett’s esophagus requires an examination called upper endoscopy or EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) which take samples of the tissue cells in the esophagus. Early diagnosis is crucial.

Because of the risk of Barrett’s Esophagus, it is extremely important to use natural remedies to successfully treat GERD and acid reflux disease…before it becomes an even bigger problem.
